Mpoma sub-county in Mukono District (20km from Kampala, the capital) has a population of over 400 Children and Youth between 04-18 years of age, who are vulnerable, destitute, socially underprivileged, most of whose parents, died of AIDS. These children are usually unable to find medical care and obtain a decent meal. They are too poor to obtain school materials. They suffer from Poor Health, unsafe Water, and Poor Educational background.

Hope for Youth - Uganda (HFYU) is registered in Uganda, as a Non-profit Organization providing Support and Services to the Children and Youth of Mpoma Sub-county in Mukono District.

HFYU strives to address these problems by combining Education and Health Services with Development Projects that will bring about self-sufficiency and positive social change among these children in the long run.

Vision:
Creating opportunities for Children and Youth in Mpoma sub-county, to cultivate, realize and utilize their potentials, talents and acquired skills for their social and economic emancipation.

Mission:
To improve the quality of life among Vulnerable Children and Youth by providing vital Primary / Vocation Education and Health Services for them to grow as responsible and active citizens.

The project is designed to provide access to Primary Education, while emphasizing Vocational Studies and Health Care Services for the vulnerable children and has initially focused on 50 orphans. They have been enrolled for Primary studies and shall later receive Vocational Studies (Ongoing Project). They shall be provided with Health Care Services plus Educational and Scholastic Materials, Cloths, Shoes, Blankets and other essential materials for the period they are at school and later shall be assisted to acquire and / or create jobs for themselves for self sustenance.

The program enables the children and the youth to optimally utilize the knowledge and skills being provided, and may be a joint effort to a fore-runner to similar vulnerable children and Youth communities countrywide.

Major Challenges

-           Lack of funds to run planned activities.

-           Extreme poverty levels, Disease and hunger in the areas

-           High expectation from the community

-           Lack of Basic Drugs in Health Centres.

-           Lack of Transport facilities.

-           Poor Nutrition status of the children.

-           Distant Health Centres, yet not stocked with Basic Drugs!

-           Mistreatment of Orphans by some family members / abandonment / rejection.

-           Unsafe and Distant water sources.

Our objectives include among others:-

  • To offer Primary and Vocational Education to help, strengthen + support the youth to develop / acquire skills relevant to their local industries and business – while empowering and building capacity for them to become self-sufficient in the long run.
  • To Provide Parental care and love by Feeding / Clothing them etc.
  • To Sensitize, Promote and increase Awareness to reduce the spread of STIs / HIV / AIDS among the Youth and on how to protect themselves against such and other related diseases.
  • To inspire, support, and promote youth engagement and the role of young people as leaders of positive social change, as a way to foster a lifelong commitment to active citizenship.
  • To prepare children and youth to lead healthy lives by providing them with the knowledge and personal skills needed to make informed and healthy choices.
  • Sports and Drama activities to occupy the idle and build healthy bodies and moods.
  • Bible study to promote God’s Love to support, encourage and strengthen one another.
  • To introduce and educate them about sustainable income-generating activities, environment management and self-help projects through DIY (Do It Yourself).
  • To train them with basic Computer skills for better and improved communication.
  • Assist them to form groups with the aim of sensitizing them on acquisition of the spirit of togetherness and voluntarism, to promote Peace, Education and Cross Cultural Friendship among them.
  • To provide information concerning adequate nutrition, manage water supplies and maintain domestic / sanitation facilities.
  • To hold quarterly meetings with counseling aides, caretakers, guardians and orphans.
  • To Solicit Support from Institutions and other charitable Organizations in the field of Youth Education and Health.
  • To do other things for achieving the above Objectives.
There are close and continuous follow-ups on activities intended to help carry on the projects objectives further for sustainability.

Organization Achievements to Date.

  • Formal Registration completed
  • Acquired Two acres of land at Kampungu Village
  • Enrollment of 30 orphans
  • Acquired a few Volunteers to work with the enrolled kids.
  • Good working relationship with Local Councils, Religious leaders and Parents.
  • Point of reference as a Focal Community Organization.

The sources of funds for the project are mainly:-

  • Well wishing Donors, and Friends.
  • Income generating Activities – for self-sustainability.

The Basic requirements of the Project include:-

a)      Physical:-

1.  An Office + Storage Facilities + Classroom Block(s).

2.  Text Books + Vocational Training Materials

3.  Volunteers

4.  Children Books and Toys + Bibles + Any others  

5.  Used Cloths, Blankets + Shoes etc.
 
b)      Office Materials:-
1.  Computers / Type writers
2.  Photocopier
3. Communication Equipment including Phone / Fax / email
4.  Stationery and office consumables
5.  Furniture and Fittings
